USAID-CIFOR-ICRAF collaboration on Forest and Climate Change

Assessing the Implications of Climate Change for USAID Forestry Programs

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The increased public and policy attention to climate change, combined with the already visible impacts of warming temperatures, have created demand and need for USAID programs to adjust to a changing future.  These changes will affect all of USAID’s activities, including its portfolio of forestry and forest conservation programs around the world.

This project will analyze the implications of these trends for USAID’s forest-related investment portfolio and specific USAID forest sector programs within the context of current US policy.  It will then build the capacity of USAID staff and local implementing partners to adjust their activities as necessary and appropriate in response to this changing world.

The main tasks of the proposed project are:

  • Analysis to determine how the trends relating to global climate change may affect USAID’s ongoing and future programming in the forest sector (WP 1. Policy and program analysis)
  • Design and facilitation of training workshops on topics identified in the above analysis, to build understanding and technical proficiency within USAID staff and local partners (WP2. Capacity Building).

The project will be executed during year 2008 by CIFOR and ICRAF
