Keeping track of forests: systems for measurement, reporting and verification


Cost-effective national forest monitoring requires credible systems of measurement, reporting and verification (MRV). Discussion in this session will focus on the latest work in international capacity development, and what countries in the region are doing.

The objective of this session was to explore the latest work in international forest MRV capacity development, and what countries in the region are doing.

To this end, this session addressed the following issues:

  • The growing importance of forest MRV as a tool for mitigating climate change, enabling carbon markets, and enhancing national land sector management capacity in the region;
  • Case studies and experiences of implementing forest MRV systems in developing countries, including the latest Australian-supported initiatives and partnerships in the region;
  • The future outlook for international MRV capacity building, including financing models, adoption of new technologies and mainstreaming.
