Abstract
Information showing the need for a strong fishery and livestock economy has been collated. The changes required to enable livestock and fisheries to contribute effectively to meeting Nigeria's food needs now and in the future have been discussed and action programs suggested. The issue is not whether Nigeria can afford fish and livestock agriculture, but how these sources of animal protein can be developed to complement the total food resources needed to feed Nigeria's growing population. In addition to a meaningful assessment of the nutritional needs of our diet, correct emphasis ought to be placed on the character of the food supply as well as the development of a balanced agriculture that most effectively and optimally utilize the country's natural resources. Virile fish and livestock industries have contributed immensely to the development of a balanced agricultural economy and better food supplies for the citizens of the technically and agriculturally advanced countries. These industries, it should be stressed, are a necessary adjunct to the attainment of the same results in the economic development of Nigeria.
