Media training on REDD+ and challenges in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

CIFOR’s Global Comparative Study on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (GCS REDD+) project has been researching and monitoring REDD+ development since 2009. Deforestation and forest degradation produce 70 percent of tropical land-use emissions and account for 10–11 percent of net global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Through comparative studies of REDD+ implementation around the world, the GCS REDD+ project takes stock of international, national and subnational REDD+ experiences to identify challenges and opportunities in designing and implementing REDD+ policies and projects.

Together with partners and the government, research is emerging on REDD+ in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). With the aim to enhance knowledge and understanding of REDD+ on the ground in the DRC, CIFOR is bringing together its partners in the DRC who are working on REDD+ together with 30 local journalists for three days of engagement, discussion and cross-pollination of ideas – all working toward the betterment of people and forests in the country. The workshop will offer key insights and up-to-date information on REDD+ in the DRC as well as research results on climate change and deforestation.

The need for specific, evidence-based answers is at the core of this work, and this workshop will support local media in producing stories based on the same.
