In collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Jepara Small-scale Furniture Producers’ Association (APKJ), CIFOR is holding a dialogue to leverage knowledge, practical options and best practices to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access global markets through Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licensing.

Indonesia’s timber exports are now dominated by pulp and paper, plywood and furniture valued at USD 11 billion annually. The government expects that timber exports will increase significantly thanks to the issuance of FLEGT licenses. For furniture – the production of which is dominated by SMEs – President Joko Widodo expects exports to triple from USD 1.5 billion to USD 5 billion between 2016 and 2021.

But how does this goal become a reality?

FLEGT licensing is not the only factor influencing exports. However, maximizing the licensing of SMEs will improve not only government performance but also the livelihoods of millions of SME-dependent people. There are opportunities and challenges to meeting FLEGT licensing requirements, and government, SMEs and civic associations need to strategize to maximize the impact of such licensing on furniture producers and others in the country that work with wood.

Please join us for a stimulating and productive dialogue between scientists, government representatives, local furniture producers and civic leaders and work to improve the lives of the artisans, woodworkers, carpenters and cultivators of Indonesia.
