New peat depth map for Dompas village reveals findings that contrast with an existing map

A previous peat depth map for Dompas village, dated 2003, was produced by the Indonesian government’s Research and Development Agency for Agricultural Land Sources (BBSDLP/ Balai Besar Litbang Sumberdaya Lahan Pertanian) using a scale of 1: 250,000.

Mapping peat depth with locals

Since the reflection and planning phase of the project, CIFOR has been working with Fire Care Community (MPA) members and the local government to produce an up-to-date, accurate and detailed map of peat depth for Dompas village.

CIFOR desk review reveals many opportunities to develop community-based initiatives for fire prevention and peatland restoration

As a part of the reflection phase of the Participatory Action Research Community-Based Fire Prevention and Peatland Restoration (PAR CBFPR) project, funded by Temasek Foundation and Singapore Cooperation Enterprise, a CIFOR team conducted a desk review in September and October 2018, with a dual focus on community-based fire prevention and peatland restoration practices in the Indonesian islands of Sumatera and Kalimantan.
