Objective 1: Enhance the structure and functioning of the furniture industry to benefit small-scale producers;

#Activity  1.1. Supply chain and cluster analysis of teak and mahogany furniture to understand and predict wood and furniture flows

  • Identify and collect available GIS/spatial data on furniture workshop, warehouses, showrooms and teak and mahogany wood resources
  • Conduct survey (using data from previous point) to complete the database on furniture and wood resources
  • Identify sources of timber for small scale producers and the constraints to timber acquisition
  • Identify and analyze grouping, efficiency and networking of the furniture industry
  • Identify and predict (including scenario building) the dynamics of wood resources, furniture enterprises and efficient timber supply

#Activity 1.2. Value chain analysis of teak and mahogany furniture to identify constraints and intervention points

  • Literature review and field work to identify actors along the venue chain from growers to retailers and the role of women in all aspects of the chain
  • Literature review and field work to identify and quantify costs and prices at each stage of the value chain; and calculate the net value added for each player along the chain
  • Identify and analyze the leading firms, power relations and rules set up by the leading firms
  • Analyze constraints for small- scale producers to beneficially participate in the value chain
  • Develop policy and intervention scenarios that will distribute value addition activities more equitably

Activity 1.3. Develop multi-stakeholder processes to support the needs of small scale producers and develop a comprehensive strategy for furniture industry

  • Workshops to strengthen the structure of the furniture industry and improve the participation and bargaining position of women as laborers
  • Workshops and facilitation on improving small-scale producers access to capital
  • Analyze policy impact pathways and develop policy recommendations for government that support the sustainability of furniture business


Objective 2. Improve marketing by small-scale producers and their organizations

Activity 2.1.Analysis of the domestic and international furniture markets, marketing networks and premium markets for small scale producers

  • Design survey; determine sample size and means for interviewing (questionnaire, internet email, web survey, etc). Conduct survey and analyze the result
  • Identify current and potential and premium markets for Jepara furniture, including market size, trends and networks
  • Analyze constraints to access to premium markets by small-scale producers

Activity 2.2. Workshops, facilitation and training to adapt to market demand and certification

  • Provide information on market networks and certification processes (Verification of Legal Origin, Chain of Custody and Sustainable Forest Management
  • Workshop to communicate market demand and certification; develop planning and agenda for market adaptation
  • Stimulate self assessment regarding certification and link producers with certification bodies (Smartwood, Mutu Agung Lestari, TUV) and certification capacity building (WWF Indonesia, USAID SEANADA and IFC programs)
  • Improve capacity to comply with certification schemes and enhance Jepara brand
  • Develop and maintain an interactive website for collective promotion and marketing

Activity 2.3. Workshop, facilitation and training to strengthen producer organizations and institutions

  • Analysis of the current role of small scale producers, women participants and their organizations (ability to organize, negotiate and mobilize resources)
  • Workshop to identify current organizations and institutions that are able to channel SME interest; develop common vision and platform for SMEs; develop plan and agenda for strengthening SMEs
  • Facilitate SMEs to draft organization, constitution and protocols and ti achieve their objectives in harmony with other furniture associations (e.g ASMINDO)
  • Business management training and facilitation (organization management, proposal writing, capital access and negotiation, etc) to overcome small-scale development constraints
  • Inform small-scale producers and other key stakeholders of value addition opportunities and benefit distribution through case comparison studies in China and Vietnam
  • Political economy study of furniture in Jepara and Indonesia


Objective 3. Monitor changes regarding the effects and early acceptance of innovations from objectives 1 and 2 and revise and/or enhance project strategies

Activity 3.1. Small scale furniture producer livelihood survey

  • Conduct livelihood survey including producer incomes, liability and assets and livelihood strategy
  • Analyze data and devise scenarios that can improve livelihoods according the available strategy
  • Conduct seminar to inform policy makers

Activity 3.2. Develop criteria, indicators and methods for change assessment and monitoring

  • Literature review on criteria/indicators and assessment methods
  • Conduct workshop on developing criteria and indicators for change assessment and monitoring
  • Develop guidelines for changes assessment and monitoring

Activity 3.3. Undertake monitoring throughout the life of the project and feed result back to activities for each objective so that strategies can be modified

  • Conduct focus group discussions at the furniture cluster level to assess the indicators of change in a participatory way
  • Develop feedback pathways for each project activity to increase the impacts
  • Summarize lessons learned for each objective regarding its impacts
  • Publish regular project newsletter every four months
