 The global human population is estimated to grow to 9 billion by 2050. Not only will there be more mouths to feed, but increasingly wealthy societies will demand a more protein-rich diet, which will require considerable land and investment. In this POLEX, CIFOR scientist Terry Sunderland compares "land sharing", where agricultural production takes place within complex multi-functional landscapes, versus "land sparing", where agricultural production on already cultivated or marginal lands is maximised, so that other areas are set aside for the conservation of biodiversity.

Forests have been largely excluded from the Rio+20 agenda even though they make important – but underappreciated – contributions toward solving many of the problems that are on the table at these discussions. To deliver the global message that forests matter, CIFOR will coordinate one of the most important conferences on forests alongside the Rio+20 summit.  A new CIFOR project in the Congo Basin is hoping to bolster scientific evidence that proves sustainable timber production in forests logged by private companies and local communities could increase carbon stocks needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

 Although the level of deforestation in the world's second-largest tropical forest remains relatively low compared to similar regions in Asia and Latin America, the latest satellite-based monitoring data has revealed that the annual rates of gross deforestation in the Congo Basin have doubled since 1990, according to a new study.

 REDD+ policies in Latin America can strengthen indigenous territorial management institutions and help defend those territories from external competitors that threaten to exploit insecure land rights, says a new report by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR).

 The United Nations chose the theme "Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty" to celebrate International Women's Day on 8 March, 2012. To achieve this goal in forestry, governments, donors, and non-government organisations need to pay more than lip service to the idea of gender and give women a strong role in forest management, says ongoing CIFOR research.

 "Oceans" will be one of the key issues under discussion at Rio+20 with the aim to ensure sustainable ocean development and the protection of marine resources, yet mangroves – whose carbon sequestering ability and raft of ocean ecosystem services are being lost at an "alarming rate" – are not mentioned at all in the summit's zero draft agenda.

If you attended FD5 in Durban you may be interested in reading this report on the conference. 79% of participants felt Forest Day has an important or very important influence on informing the formulation of new government policies, with one participant in the Forest Day 5 survey commenting that "The contribution of Forest Day to the negotiations on REDD+ in the COP is clear – scope, MRV, field implementation, safeguards, certification and finance are all there."
