 As many as 400 people are expected to attend a two-day policy and science conference next month in Cameroon to discuss critical issues facing the sustainable management of Central Africa’s forests. The 40 confirmed speakers at the conference include government ministers, global experts, researchers and private-sector stakeholders.

 CIFOR launches an ambitious new research program in India to bolster study of the forests of South Asia – a region facing increasing pressures from climate change, poverty and depletion of natural resources. Focusing specifically on the Western Ghats mountain range along West India and the Himalayas, Louis Verchot, CIFOR’s lead scientist for the program, believes a multi-sectoral approach could help achieve positive and sustainable outcomes for local communities.

 CIFOR Director General, Peter Holmgren proposes a possible configuration of the Sustainable Development Goals, which are expected to replace the Millennium Development Goals in 2015. “Rural economies including agriculture, forestry and fisheries have often been underrepresented in development frameworks such as the MDGs. Yet, they represent some of the largest issues and potentials for all dimensions of sustainable development in all regions,” he writes.

 A recent article in The Economist magazine asserted that the air temperature of the planet has been flat for the past 15 years despite a steady increase in the greenhouse gas concentration of the atmosphere. In this blog, CIFOR scientists Louis Verchot and Arild Angelsen question both the claim that global temperatures have stabilized and the policy conclusions drawn by The Economist.

 Children living in the Indonesian forests on Borneo island portray a bleak image of the future, according to preliminary findings on environmental perceptions revealed by CIFOR researcher Anne-Sophie Pellier. Drawings by almost 250 children between the ages of nine and 15 living in the provinces of East and West Kalimantan consistently depict a future environment characterized by mostly non-forest landscapes, with animals either non-existent or corralled into small areas.
