Leveraging scientific knowledge for investment and impact: How CGIAR research is improving rural livelihoods and protecting the environment

Deforestation, land degradation, natural capital depletion, climate change, and social disruption are perennial and interconnected problems, and they require perennial and interconnected solutions. Poor people are disproportionally affected by these problems for a range of reasons, including: residing in the riskiest areas, depending on income sources that are most vulnerable to climate shocks, and lacking the capital to invest in building resilience. Well-supported and designed economic development can support climate change adaptation, wiser land use and more prosperous diversification.

In addressing these challenges, the international agricultural research centers that are members of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) are seeking to update the conventional thinking about public goods. Against this background, two CGIAR centers – the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) have decided to join forces and establish a new global institution with a focus on sustainable and equitable land use, innovative finance and performance landscape management.

Tony Simons and Robert Nasi, the Directors General of ICRAF and CIFOR, will explain how the new Center plans to leverage an accumulated legacy of US$1.8 billion worth of data, analyses and evidence, as well as technical, social and policy solutions. The aim is to translate these knowledge products into more demanded knowledge services. They will include case study examples of how the challenges of deforestation, land degradation, natural capital depletion, climate change, and social disruption can/are being addressed in terms of results/impacts.
