Sehingga penting bagi Indonesia meninjau alternatif pilihan guna memenuhi berbagai tujuan nasional yang saat ini saling berbenturan,” kata Frances Seymour, Direktur Jenderal CIFOR dalam siaran pers, Senin (15/8/2011) Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) menyelenggarakan konferensi bertajuk “Hutan Indonesia: Alternatif Masa Depan untuk Memenuhi Kebutuhan Pangan, Kayu, Energi dan Redd+.”

Konferensi Internasional ini rencananya akan digelar di Hotel Shangri-La di Jakarta pada 27 September 2011 mendatang.

“Desde el principio, los pueblos indígenas tienen que estar involucrados en el diseño e implementación de proyectos REDD+”, dijo Terry Sunderland, científico especialista en bosques y medios de vida del Centro para la Investigación Forestal Internacional (CIFOR). “Aunque el compromiso con los pueblos indígenas trae consigo dificultades, éstas tienen que ser superadas para que REDD funcione”.

Daniel Cooney, CIFOR Media Liaison and Outreach Manager share his article on REDD pilot projects in Brazil that are springing up – some re-vamped pre-existing forest conservation projects, others re-packaged social-development programs.

A researcher from the Bogor based Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Stibniati Atmadja, said it is still early stages in the REDD projects. “This is a new thing for developing countries like Indonesia,” she said.“No one can guarantee the success rate of these projects.” She points out that until the projects have reached the end of their cycles in 2013, it will be difficult to guage how effective they’ve been. “[2013’s] the moment when we can find out which kinds of REDD projects fit each specific area,” Stipniati said “This whole thing is a learning process.” Another uncertainty around the end of the project cycle is the future of the land used for the REDD projects.
