PENELITIAN potensi limbah hasil kegiatan penebangan hutan dan perladangan yang telah dilakukan oleh CIFOR di wilayah Kabupaten Malinau pada bulan Januari 2005, menunjukkan bahwa potensi limbah yang dihasilkan cukup tinggi. Penelitian yang dilakukan di beberapa areal Izin Usaha Pengelolaan hasil Hutan dan Kayu (IUPHHK) dan perladangan masyarakat di wilayah Kabupaten Malinau.

Yaounde (Mfoundi)- In what ways can legislators and political parties work together for effective environmental management and protection ? How important are environmental matters in the agenda of most political parties ? It was to give satisfactory answers to these questions that an Africa-wide research programme was recently carried out under the banner "Legislative Environmental Representation" (LER) by the Network for the Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa (NESDA-CA) and CIFOR with the support of USAID and the Washington-based World Resources Institute (WRI). In a series of policy briefs, it was observed that political parties have the responsibility of securing the fundamental entitlements for compliance by forging partnerships between governments, the citizenry, the civil society and legislators. Consequently, this initiative aims to spur political parties to understand the crucial role they must play in the legislative process, especially in strenghhening and enabling legislators to perform better in the National Assembly where they play a great role in decision making.

One of the worst environmental disasters in Indonesian history was an ambitious but failed rice-growing project in Central Kalimantan during the Soeharto era. One million hectares of virgin forest were staked on a venture that proved a dud. All that remains is a wasteland of little value to local people or anyone else. It was like the government was playing a game where the potential payout was huge, but so were the risks.

The zeal to instill a coordinated management system could be clearly seen last Tuesday March 22 in Lomie where stakeholders in forest management met to clearly define the modus operandi of a new management system, code name, model forest. The interests of 73 villages were represented at that meeting.

Model forest is the new management concept, introduced in the country by the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) with the aim of getting Cameroon into the mainstream of the International Model Forest Network.

17 March 2005 – Sustainable use of the world’s forests not only creates employment and generates income but also can help avert the emergence of conflicts and promote rehabilitation where conflicts have erupted, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said today.

La organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO) aseguró este jueves que los bosques y selvas del mundo son una fuente de desarrollo económico fundamental e instó a una explotación sostenible y justa de los recursos forestales.
