They don’t have to be mutually exclusive, say the corporations, governments and NGOs that signed the New York Declaration on Forests one year ago. But it’s a wicked problem with lots of challenges. One scientist breaks them down

  • NOW WHAT? On the anniversary of the New York Declaration, it’s time to get down to business
  • INDONESIA: What needs to happen to curb deforestation.

GLOBAL FOREST ASSESSMENTS

An elephant in the room

CIFOR'S Director General highlights discrepancies in global forest assessments and calls for greater transparency, collaboration, national commitments and greater investments in national institutions to improve international reporting on forest cover.

  • DIGGING DEEPER: In a second column, the DG focuses on country-level data – and potential solutions

Brazil nut and timber trees grow side-by-side in the Peruvian Amazon. But can smallholders get the best of both without harming the lucrative Brazil nut industry? CIFOR researchers aimed to find the delicate balance.

  • NOT ONE, NOT THREE … This interview reveals what might be the magic number for timber and Brazil nuts
  • GOOD NEIGHBORS: This video explores the relationship between these two trees

France’s environment minister Ségolène Royal and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner have confirmed they will speak at the 2015 Global Landscapes Forum in Paris on 5–6 December.

More than 250 speakers will take part in the event, including:

  • Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, one of the 100 most powerful women in the world (Forbes)
  • Emmanuel Faber, CEO of Danone
  • Abdon Nababan, Secretary General of AMAN, Indonesia’s biggest indigenous people alliance
  • Stephen O’Brien, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator

These ecosystems account for almost half of the world’s tropical and subtropical forests. But they’re being cleared rapidly. The alarm was raised about dry forests 4 years ago – one scientist asks what’s being done.

XIV WORLD FORESTRY CONGRESS

Insights from Durban

With more than 30 presentations at this year’s WFC, CIFOR scientists highlighted the contribution of forests to the global development agenda. Here's what some of them had to say.

  • WALK THE TALK: CIFOR'S DG calls for more action on the ground at the World Forestry Congress
  • GENDER: CIFOR scientists ask why the word gets so misused
  • OXYMORON: What does the ‘landscape approach’ mean to forestry? A CIFOR scientist weighs in

FIRE AND HAZE

The burning questions

Once again, the topic is spreading across Southeast Asia as agricultural fires take hold in Indonesia. But current actions focus on firefighting, and long-term solutions need to look at the political economy of fires, one scientist argues.
