ARE ZERO DEFORESTATION COMMITMENTS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

In recent years, the footprint commodity crops leave on tropical forests has become too large to miss. This has called commodity companies’ practices into question, and in their response, led to an uptick of zero deforestation commitments (ZDCs).

Conserving biodiversity, mitigating climate change, supporting smallholder land use – on paper, ZDCs sound great. But in the twists and turns of global value chains, ZDCs pose difficulties that can see suppliers and local communities adopt work-arounds causing more harm than good. A new study looks at the realities and challenges of ZDCs, and how they can better live up to their name. Read the full story here.
