Abundantly available, bamboo is already a source of food, fibre, firewood and construction material in Indonesia. Now, scientists -- who will speak at the imminent GLF conference in Bonn -- are exploring its potential for energy production and restoration of degraded land. This month, the new International Tropical Peatland Center was launched. It offers training and more to help ensure fragile peatland ecosystems are a part of conservation efforts worldwide. In Indonesia, local industries are adapting to the new normal of protecting peatlands, and farmers are learning about practical alternatives to fire use in farming systems. In Bhutan, forests are a key part of life, contributing to the country’s Gross National Happiness quotient. |
