CIFOR at the UNFCCC COP20

1 - 12 December 2014, Lima, Peru

The UNFCCC COP20 in Lima is the last major stop on the road to an expected global climate agreement in Paris in 2015. CIFOR scientists will participate in a number of side events during the two weeks of the COP, helping to inform the negotiations by bringing to bear research on such topics as REDD+ and land-use change; carbon sequestration in coastal ecosystems; and the effects of climate change on wildlife in the Amazon.

SESSIONS

REDD+ Monitoring Needs to Support the Distribution of Benefits

Emphasis in the literature on REDD+ monitoring of forest area changes and carbon stocks to meet international requirements. We discuss evolving needs for monitoring to address national needs related to REDD+ implementation and benefit sharing.

|

Forest Potential for Climate Change Mitigation in the Post-Kyoto Climate Policy Framework

From concerns about forest permanence to the potential for LULUCF-REDD+ convergence, and the potential for a forest contribution to “negative emissions” – the panel will address the forest potential for climate change mitigation in the Post-Kyoto climate policy framework.

|

REDD+ Emerging? What We Can Learn from Subnational Initiatives

REDD+ is experiencing high expectations and big challenges. Controversies will continue until there is sufficient evidence on implementation. This panel gives evidence from subnational initiatives: a casebook, a Brazil initiative, and Indonesia’s integration of initiatives in a national framework.

Climate Services from Coastal Ecosystems: Blue Carbon and Green Infrastructure

Coastal ecosystems provide ecosystem services that support both climate mitigation and adaptation efforts. This event will highlight recent efforts to conserve and restore these ecosystems to take advantage of these valuable climate services.

|

Benefit and Burden Sharing in Forest Policies and REDD+

The event addresses the benefits and costs associated with forest conservation initiatives across multiple countries, and their equity implications. It builds on results gathered from an ongoing multi-year European Commission-funded project aimed to provide policy options and guidance to improve the design, development, and implementation of REDD+ benefit sharing mechanisms.

Guiding Principles for Delivering Coastal Wetland Carbon Projects

Coastal wetland ecosystems play a significant role in sequestering and storing carbon in biomass and soils. These ecosystems, however, facing tremendous pressure and large portion of them are already degraded due to unsustainable cuttings and aquaculture development. This panel will discuss options for policy and practice for improving sustainability and realizing the full mitigation and adaptation potential of coastal wetland ecosystems.
