Privacy Policy
We take your data privacy seriously. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it and how we use that information. We store your information securely and will never share it with anyone. You can change your preferences at any time.
CIFOR is the administrator of various websites, which collect information in order to provide better services to all of our users. This may include some information that can identify you, but that is not sensitive. This policy aims to help you understand the terms and conditions that govern the collection and use of such information.
This policy applies to: cifor.org, foreststreesagroforestry.org and globallandscapesforum.org, collectively referred to as “the Site”.
1. What information we may collect
Personally identifiable information
When you subscribe to receive our news updates, event invitations, and other emails, you will be asked for basic personal information that helps to identify you such as your name, email address, organizational affiliation and country of residence. If you apply for a job at CIFOR, you will be asked to provide information typically found in a curriculum vitae.
We collect only the personal data from you in order to provide you with the service you requested. Your personal data will be kept with us until you unsubscribe from our mailing list.
At any time, you can opt out of receiving emails from us clicking the ‘Unsubscribe’ link at the bottom of all of our emails, or by contacting us at cifor@cgiar.org. You can also request to have your personal data modified or deleted.
Non-personally identifiable information
When you access the Site for general browsing, we do not collect any personal information from you. The only information we collect is Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser type, operating system, the files you download, the pages you visit, and the dates/times of those visits. These do not specifically identify you. The information is used only for website traffic analysis in order to improve our websites, and we treat it confidentially.
Cookies
A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site. In general, cookies have two main purposes: to improve your browsing experience by remembering your actions and preferences, and to help us analyze our website traffic.
CIFOR uses cookies to help us analyze traffic to the Site, to help us improve website performance and usability, and to make the Site more secure. Third-party cookies help us use Google Analytics to count, track and analyze visits to the Site. This helps us understand how people are using our websites and where we need to make improvements. These third-party cookies do not specifically identify you.
You are always free to delete cookies that are already on your computer through your browser settings, and you can set most browsers to prevent them from being added to your computer. However, this may prevent you from using certain features on the Site.
IP Addresses
In addition, CIFOR also records your IP address, which is the Internet address of your computer, and information such as your browser type and operating system. This information helps us learn about the geographical distribution of our website visitors and the technology they use to access the Site.
For example, our photo and video competitions allow a specific IP address to vote only once. This helps us ensure that our competitions are fair and that every competitor gets an equal chance. Another example is the publication download paywall, which uses your IP address to track our publication dissemination.
Event and youth registration
We currently use “Expressions of Interest” Google forms and Eventbrite for event registrations to capture email IDs and bank information. If you do not consent to our use this information, you will not be able to participate in our events /youth activities.
Social media
If you share our content on Facebook, Twitter or other social media accounts, we may track what content you share. This helps us improve our social media outreach.
2. How CIFOR will use your information
The personal information we collect will be used for the following purposes:
- giving you the information, updates or services you have requested
- communicating with you about an event or conference
- evaluating your job application
- complying with financial regulations and the law
We may process your information using third-party service providers or agents, who may be located outside your home country. However, your information will only be used for the purposes you requested or agreed to, or as required by law.
As indicated above, we will use your non-personally identifiable information to facilitate analysis of website traffic to improve the performance and usability of the Site and to better provide security.
3. How we will protect your personal information
Personal information is only shared internally in order to provide you with the service(s) you have requested. We share non-personal information within CIFOR and with companies and/or consultants involved in our communications activities. CIFOR may transfer (or otherwise make available) your personal information to other members of the CIFOR organizational network.
We ensure that your information is stored securely and is accurate and up to date. We will keep your data only as long as it is needed, or until you ask us to delete it. We keep your information confidential except where disclosure is required or permitted by law or as described under ‘Prohibited Use’.
CIFOR may use third parties to process your information All of our service providers are required to maintain the confidentiality and security of your personal information, and to use it only in compliance with applicable privacy laws. These third parties are required to comply strictly with instructions that they not use your personal information for their own business purposes.
Terms of Use
1. Materials accessible through the Site
Throughout the Site, you may access materials including but not limited to images, information, documents, audio recordings, videos and services (“Materials”) either:
- developed and made available by CIFOR (“CIFOR Materials“), or
- made available by contributors through a blog or other service of the Site (“Contributed Materials”), or
- belonging to or originating from third parties (including CGIAR Centers) and aggregated on the Site and/or made accessible through links to third party websites (“Third Party Materials”).
2. Permitted use of CIFOR materials
CIFOR aims to create international public goods. For this purpose, the CIFOR Materials are made available in the most open and easily accessible way. You may download, copy, reproduce, republish, modify, post, broadcast, transmit, distribute, make available to the public, or otherwise use CIFOR Materials in any way, provided that:
- you attribute the work and any identified source,
- your use is for non-commercial, research, educational or personal purposes, and
- you, in turn, license such Materials under the same conditions.
Should you wish to deviate from these conditions, please contact CIFOR in order to seek prior authorization.
3. Third party materials
Your use of Third Party Materials is solely governed by the terms of use contained in the third-party websites such Third Party Materials originate from. Third Party Materials are outside the domain, control and responsibility of CIFOR which is providing access to them as a convenience only. No sponsorship or endorsement by CIFOR is therefore hereby implied.
4. Contributed materials
By posting Contributed Materials, contributors agree to grant CIFOR, its successors and assigns, a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free, sub-licensable and transferable license to use, copy, modify, perform, publish and disseminate the Contributed Materials on the Site and in derivative works, and warrant that the exercise of such rights does not infringe any third-party rights, including copyright. If the foregoing is false, Contributor shall defend, indemnify, and hold CIFOR harmless from any resulting claims, damages or costs (including reasonable attorney fees).
5. Prohibited use
You agree not to use this Site, including the Materials, for any unlawful purpose or in any way that would violate the rights of others, including intellectual property rights. You agree not use the CIFOR logo without our prior written authorization.
If you post or send offensive, inappropriate or objectionable content anywhere on or to the Site, or otherwise engage in disruptive behavior, we may use your personal information to stop this behavior. If we have reason to believe that you are or may be in breach of any applicable laws, we may use your personal information to inform relevant third parties such as law enforcement agencies about the content and your behavior.
6. Disclaimer/ limitation of liability
The Site is provided by CIFOR “as is”. CIFOR makes every effort to ensure, but makes no warranties, either express or implied, as to the accuracy, reliability, timeliness, non-infringement, merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose of any of the Materials. In no event shall CIFOR be liable for any loss or damages of any nature, including special, indirect, punitive or consequential damages, arising in connection with the access, use or reliance on any of the Materials.
7. Modification of this Privacy Policy and Terms of Use
CIFOR reserves the right to modify this Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. All modifications will be posted on this web page.
