International Conference to Promote the Development of Tropical Non-Timber Forest Products and Services. Beijing, China, 23-28 S

For decades, non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and services have generated high expectations due to their potential to combine forest management and conservation with income generation. However, progress has often been less than hoped for and expected.

This conference, designed primarily to showcase practical rather than theoretical/academic experiences with NTFPs and forest services in the tropics, will:

• bring producers, traders and consumers together to share experiences in promoting tropical NTFPs in domestic and international trade;
• study opportunities to promote the development of NTFPs and forest services that can improve the economic attractiveness of maintaining the forest resource base;
• and make recommendations on policy and other measures to promote the sustainable production of NTFPs and the sustainable provision of forest services.

Participants will include decision-makers and experts from governments, companies and cooperatives, industry associations, local communities, and international and non-governmental organizations. The conference will be open to all interested participants and there will be no fees for participation, except for those fees associated with pre- and post- conference tours to NTFP centers.

EU-China Conference, Forest Law Enforcement and Governance. Beijing on 19-20 September 2007.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China, through the State Forestry Administration, the Governments of Germany and the United Kingdom and the European Commission have the pleasure to announce that they will hold a high-level international conference on Forest Law Enforcement and Governance in Beijing on 19-20 September 2007.

The conference will be open to government representatives from major timber producing countries as well as major wood consuming countries, scientific experts and various stakeholders (in business, non-governmental organisations etc.). It will examine ways to achieve sustainable forest management by improving forest law enforcement and governance and achieve sustainable global trade and markets for forest products, using tools such as forest certification, legality verification schemes and procurement policies.

Presentations and discussions will focus on three themes:

• Forest law enforcement and governance in sustainable management of global forests
• Sustainable trade of forest products
• Current means to promote sustainable forest management and information sharing

This workshop will be held as part of CIFOR’s Lower Mekong Conservation and Development Project. The workshop, like the project, aims to gain a better understanding of the issues, synergies and tradeoffs of conservation and development at landscapes where a biodiversity conservation project is implemented by government or an international agency. The objective of the workshop is to bring together experienced personnel from conservation and development organisations working in five landscapes in Vietnam (Cat Tien NP, Quang Nam, Bach Ma NP, Tam Dao NP and Haong Lien NP) to compare the landscapes, threats and strategies of implemented biodiversity conservation projects.

The workshop will be facilitated by Terry Sunderland (CIFOR), Luke Preece (Charles Darwin University) and Manuel Ruiz Perez (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid). It will be an informal meeting to begin to compile information on thirty variables that have been selected to compare projects and landscapes. Resulting discussions about issues faced by organisations will be used to gain a better understanding of the situation and communicate between organisations.

Modeling Conservation and Development Outcomes: Training Course on participatory modeling, September 10-14, 2007, Vietnam

Interdisciplinary and action oriented approaches are gradually gaining ground and acceptance as important tools in conservation-development research. In this international research and training course we will provide an overview of such approaches, and explore some of these approaches to build visions of the future. To build these visions we will use participatory simulation modeling tools (using the STELLA software).

The course is hosted by Cat Tien National Park PMU (CAT TIEN PMU), Vietnam in collaboration with Center for International Forest Research (CIFOR), The World conservation Union (IUCN), WWF – the Global conservation organization, and Charles Darwin University (CDU). It is directed towards project personnel, PhD students and researchers with a focus on conservation and development issues in the tropics.

The Australian Crawford Fund’s 2007 annual conference on 15 August in Parliament House, Canberra, will examine whether biofuels enhance or undermine food security. Titled "Biofuels, Energy and Agriculture – Powering Towards or Away From Food Security?" the conference will be opened by The Hon Alexander Downer, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, and feature keynote addresses by Dr Joachim Von Braun, Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute and Lord Ron Oxburgh, Member of the UK House of Lords and Chair of D1 Oils and former Chair of Shell UK.

Speakers include experts from Brazil and India who will talk about biofuels in their respective countries. Integration occurs across many boundaries including geographic, administrative, ownership, time, and academic disciplines. This All-Division 6 IUFRO conference will focus on science conducted across the many different dimensions of integration and how such science relates to integrated land management. Issues of research administration, educational and scientific outreach, policy, recreation/tourism/nature conservation, forest and environmental history, gender studies, environmental economics, forest terminology, social and community studies, natural resource governance, and many other fields should be able to find a place in this important theme which cuts across time and space, national boundaries, and academic disciplines.

The Asia-Pacific Tropical Forest Investment Forum: Issues and opportunities for investment in natural tropical forests. 6-8 Augu

The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) is bringing together a wide range of stakeholders to facilitate information exchange and identify mechanisms for increased private investment in natural tropical forests in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Forum will be interactive, with panel discussions and plenary presentations by senior executives from major investment funds, banks, government and non-governmental agencies and forest companies. The discussions and presentations will cover global investment trends, constraints and opportunities, methodologies, case-studies, and legislation related to increasing investment for revenue generation schemes, including markets for forest services and nontimber forest products.

The forum will bring together private investors, companies with an exposure to timberland in their investment portfolios, public sector institutions, leading forestry and conservation agencies and representatives from the forestry sector in the Asia-Pacific region. Participation at the Asia-Pacific Tropical Forest Investment Forum is open to all interested stakeholders from forestry, conservation and finance sectors and there are no registration or attendance fees. But participants are expected to pay their own transportation and hotel accommodation, meals and other costs while in Bangkok.

International Conference on Community Forest Management and Enterprises – July 16-20, Rio Branco (AC), Brazil. This conference will bring together about 250 leaders of forest communities, public forest agencies, forest industry and conservation groups to share experiences in community forest management and enterprises from around the world.

It will explore case studies from more than a dozen community forests and debate the best ways of assisting the sustainable development of community-based operations. The conference is organized by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) and the Global Alliance of Community Forestry (GACF) in cooperation with IUCN – the World Conservation Union. It is hosted by the Government of Acre and the Government of Brazil through the newly created Brazilian Forest Agency.
