Dietrich Schmidt-Vogt is a geographer and senior scientist at the ICRAF East- and Central Asia Office in Kunming, China, since 2009. Before joining ICRAF, he was affiliated with the Kunming Institute of Botany, China, the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, and with the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University, Germany. He obtained his doctoral and postdoctoral degrees at Heidelberg University, Germany, and has 30 years of research experience in the Himalayan region and in Southeast Asia. His research interests include forest-farming interactions and integrated land use systems. Current projects that he is involved in are aimed at understanding and providing alternatives to processes of land use transition in Mainland SE-Asia. He has extensive experience in teaching and supervising Master and PhD students as well as in capacity building for academic institutions in Southeast Asia and East Asia.
