Photographer’s remarks

This is an image of a mangrove tree sapling taken in Malaysia. Mangrove trees are crucial because they protect the coastline against erosion. They are important for the ecosystem and biodiversity as they are breeding grounds for a variety of aquatic animals such as fish, crabs and shrimp. Mangroves play an economic role as they are a source of income for shoreline communities. Mangroves also act as a filter by absorbing harmful heavy metals from the water and pollutants from the air. Another advantage of mangroves is that they improve the aesthetic quality of shorelines, which is beneficial for tourism.
