Sloping lands in transition (SLANT) is an emerging research initiative aimed at understanding the environmental and social outcomes of national and local policies and international development programs promoting afforestation and forest landscape restoration in hilly and mountainous areas. In many of these regions, landscapes are managed by smallholder communities with diverse forestry and agriculture practices. Projects initiated under SLANT are conceived to develop research questions grounded in the perspectives of such communities to better inform decisions that affect their lands and livelihoods.
