Field trip with UK delegation

The UK delegation undertook several activities during a trip to Riau, including discussions with NGOs and the Government of Bengkalis, facilitated by CIFOR. They also visited an Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) mill in Perawang and met with the Governments of Riau and Siak districts.

The CIFOR team organized a field trip with the ambassador and UK delegation to visit two sites recently burned in 2015. The first of these locations was Desa Buruk Bakul (considered ‘grey’ as it was originally a concession, but with no update regarding its current status) where 800 hectares were burnt.

The second site was land belonging to a village named Kampung Jawa, under the administration of Kelurahan Pakning. The burnt area was community land, but the owner did not live in the village. The community attributed the fire to human carelessness, although they also complained that the canal was empty due to the company nearby.
