Local culture

Language

Malay is the official language of Brunei Darussalam, and English is widely used. Other languages include Chinese and its dialect variants, and other indigenous dialects. The official religion is Islam, while diverse faiths are also practiced, such as Christianity and Buddhism.

Islamic etiquette

Islam is the state religion of Brunei Darussalam. Visitors are welcome to visit mosques, provided that some etiquette is followed. In general, proper attire is requested; women are required to cover their head, shoulders, and knees. Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be removed before entering a mosque. Please do not pass in front of people in prayer, and do not touch the Al-Quran. Please ask for permission before taking photographs, particularly inside.

Clothing

Light clothing is advisable, as the climate is generally warm and humid. Women are requested to dress modestly in keeping with local customs. For the field trip on 5 August, participants are advised to bring suitable outdoor gear.
