Ida Bagus Putera Parthama
Director General of Sustainable Forest Management, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Republic of Indonesia
Dr Ida Bagus Putera Parthama is Director General of Sustainable Management of Production Forests at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Republic of Indonesia. Prior to his current position, Putera was Senior Adviser to Minister of Forestry on Economic Affairs and International Trade. He spent a large part of his career at the Ministry of Forestry’s Research and Development Agency, giving him plenty chances to interact with CIFOR, including serving as a member of CIFOR’s Board of Trustee in 2013. As indicated by his job title, his current responsibility is to ensure the country’s nearly 69 million-hectare production forest is managed in a sustainable manner. Indonesia’s Timber Legality Information System, SVLK, is an important part of his portofolio. He firmly holds the view that the ‘soft approach’, namely preventing illegal wood from entering markets, constitutes the ‘sufficient condition’ for tackling illegal logging. He continues to request trade partner countries to recognize SVLK and close their markets to non-SVLK certified wood products. A graduate from Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia, Putera is a forester by training. He holds a Masters degree and PhD from Michigan State University.
