John Herbohn
Professor of Tropical Forestry, University of the Sunshine Coast
Dr John Herbohn is Professor of Tropical Forestry at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and is the Director of the Tropical Forests and People Research Centre. His research into reforestation of tropical areas spans social, economic, biophysical and policy disciplines. One focus of his research is reforestation systems that improve livelihoods and food security of smallholders in developing countries. Herbohn is a strong advocate of transdisciplinary approaches in both research and on-ground reforestation efforts. He holds an undergraduate degree in botany and a PhD in rainforest ecology. He has also completed postgraduate degrees in accounting and finance, and is a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA). He has published 120 journal articles and book chapters, is Managing Editor of Small-scale Forestry and is on the editorial boards of Nature Scientific Reports and Forestry. Herbohn currently leads two large transdisciplinary reforestation research projects in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. He has substantial forest industry experience, and for the past 10 years has been a non-executive director for two New Zealand plantation companies with forest estates valued at around $2 billion. He is a strong advocate for safety within the forest industry.
