As an artistic capital, Yogyakarta is filled with beautiful, one-of-a-kind items. One of Yogyakarta’s best-known specialties is batik, cloth that is put through a unique wax-resistant dyeing technique. Batik is known in the international community as an Indonesian specialty and in country, Yogyakarta is renowned for its motifs and methods.

The city is also known for its shadow puppets. Many artisans around the Kraton create quality puppets based on characters from the famous shadow puppet play, the Ramayana.

Also know for its abundance of artisans and craftsmen, the handmade goods such as jewelry and original paintings found in Yogyakarta are also good bets for one-of-a-kind gifts and decorations that are thoroughly Indonesian.
