
Vegard Kaale was born in Oslo, Norway, on 28 April 1961. He obtained his Masters degree on Political Science from the Oslo University, Norway, in 1986. Kaale started his career as an Executive Officer at Teledirektoratet (Telecommunications) in Oslo (1987–1990). He started his career as a Diplomat when he became an Advisor for the Department for European Affairs at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991 – 1998), after which he then had an extensive career with the Ministry, including stints as First Secretary, Norwegian Embassy in Dublin, Ireland (1998 – 2001); Deputy Director General, Personnel Section, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2001 – 2005); Minister Councillor, Norwegian Embassy in the Hague, Netherlands (2005 – 2008); Senior Advisor at the Section for the High North, Climate and Energy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2008 – 2012); and Policy Director at the Section for Development Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2012 – 2014). Prior to being appointed as the Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste in late 2017, he was the Director at the Energy Section, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2014 – 2017).
