
Haris Gunawan is currently Deputy of Research and Development at the Peat Restoration Agency, where he aims to strengthen cooperation between universities and the research institution; build an integrated peatland restoration model based on the hydrological unity of peatlands; develop peatland monitoring technology and innovations; and continue expanding the network of research cooperation both to domestic and foreign parties. Gunawan is involved in various research cooperation teams, both domestic and abroad, which brings him directly in contact with communities living in the peat swamp forest ecosystems. He has conducted ecological and environmental studies on peat swamp ecosystems, peat restoration and community assistance, peat mapping, community-based ecotourism development and peat ecosystems. He earned his Bachelor degree from Gadjah Mada University in 1997, then pursued his Master and Doctorate at the Bandung Institute of Technology and Kyoto University, Japan.
